Wildlife Photographer of the year

I guess that you already know about the prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition, a 46 year old photo contest organized annually by the Natural History Museum and BBC Wildlife Magazine.

In 2009 the winner of the best photo, José Luis Rodriguez, who presumably took a remarkable photo of a Siberian Grey Wolf, was disqualified after the jury found out that the wolf is not wild but tamed and the wolf’s name is Ossian. Naughty boy Jose!

Anyhow, if you want to participate in the Wildlife Photographer of the 2010 competition, you can still send your photos until march 5th 2010.

Shagged by a Kakapo Parrot!

This is quite old, I know, but I just found out about it. So, the story is like this:
Zoologist Mark Carwardine along side Stephen Fry were making a documentary about animals on the edge of extinction. If you don’t already know, in New Zealand there’s this parrot, the largest of all but who can’t fly, who is so rare that few people really got to see one.
Because this parrot cannot fly, he adopts a simple and not always effective strategy: he stays very still! Before mankind discovered many wild islands, especially in the New Zealand area, these parrots were happy with their life. When humans got to know about Kakapo Parrots and brought felines with them, well, the poor birds were facing a great danger: cats!

As far as I’ve read about these birds, there are plans about evacuating an island for Kakapo Parrots where cats and other predators don’t have access to, in order to prevent the extinction of this wonderful bird.
Well, as I was saying in the beginning, Stephen Fry and Mark Carwardine were making a BBC documentary when, all of a sudden, this Kakapo bird comes and starts shagging the photographers head. It’s hilarious!

The Mick “Jaguar” wildcat

This is Mick Jaguar, a some sort of feline Mick Jagger, who got this name after his huge tongue was compared to the famous rock star from Rolling Stones.
Mick Jaguar’s tongue is 15 inch long. The gorgeous feline lives at the Philadelphia Zoo in Pennsylvania.

Amazing white tigers pictures!

We already talked about White tigers and about the genetic malformations they pass from one generation to another.

This time I’m going to present you some fabulous pictures of rare white tigers. The photographs were taken by Birte Person in Singapore Zoo where 6 rare white tigers live in harmony.

After dinner, the tigers were playing in the water giving Birte Person the time to take these amazing shots.

As well as the White Lion is part of the Leo family (Panthera Leo Krugeri), the White Tiger belongs to the Bengal tigers family, Panthera tigris.

A baby moose saved by an Alaska family!

Randy Richards and his family decided to save the calf who got lost from it’s mother. Randy’s dogs chased the calf is his yard where the baby moose was seen and saved by its family. He still had the umbilical cord meaning that he was born a few hours/days before getting lost from mama moose.

The calf caused some commotion during the rainy night from Wednesday to Thursday, running around the yard and crying for its mother. But morning arrived and Mama Moose still was nowhere to be seen.

So Richards started making calls.

Nick Cassara, a fish and game technician Richards spoke to that morning, was making calls too. He said the Milwaukee County Zoo had applied to the state for two moose. The application wasn’t yet approved but the Alaska Zoo, where a lot of moose orphans end up, agreed to take care of the calf until it was.

Now the calf is going to live at Alaska Zoo.

Thank God there are still nice people out there!

New Panda baby in Thailand

In Thailand, Chiang Mai province, you can see a new Panda bear cub born at the Zoo.

The happy mother is Li Hui, a seven year old Panda mama bear. Look at the tiny cub. He/she is just 2 days old.

People from Zimbabwe are eating elephants to stay alive!

It’s a sad, sad story! People of Zimbabwe are starving. They have no food: no meat, no cereals, no nothing. About 90% of the country’s population is unemployed.

Farmers have been ordered to leave their farms and leave the country. Although the majority of food came from those farms, the president has other plans with the country. People are starving. Those who survive the hunger, die from diseases like malaria and Aids.

Because there is no food, people of Zimbabwe have started to hunt down animals from national parks. Giraffes, zebras, anthilopes, even elephants are killed for their meat. Buffalos are the main target but when the hunger is too strong, elephant meat will make the hunger go away.

A friend of mine has recently traveled to Bucharest, to find his love. Those were exactly his words. Anyhow, it seems that love took him to visit Herastrau Park, one of the biggest parks in Bucharest, capital of Romania.

He gave me a few photos he took with a curious and sweet squirrel. How can you not love these cute, silly animals?
