Monifa, the Pygmy hippo
His/her name is Monifa and it’s a baby pygmy hippo. Now Monifa is as big as a puppy (is three weeks old) but we all know how big hippos grow. Fortunately, pygmy hippos are smaller than the common hippopotamus. These animals are native to the forests and swamps of western Africa. They are reclusive and nocturnal.
Monifa now lives in Australia’s Taronga Zoo in Sydney.
Unfortunately, pygmy hippos are endangered (there are only about 3000 hippos in the world) because they cannot survive and breed by their own in the wild due to natural predators, poaching, hunting, war and loss of habitat.
