Mama, can I have a tattoo?
I have a neighbor that’s a bit strict with her 18 years old daughter. In some ways I have to agree with her. Teenagers are nowadays exposed to many things and many of them are not that healthy. Anyway, her daughter wants a tattoo (she turned 18 last month and she thinks she’s entitled to do whatever she pleases with her body). She’s a bit confused right now, she doesn’t know what kind of tattoo she likes but her mother strongly disagrees with her getting a permanent tattoo.
During the last 2 weeks she was visiting all sorts of websites with tattoo photos and a couple of days ago she sent me a few photos of what she thinks is “cool”. Besides she hopes this way her mother will be ok with the idea of her getting a tattoo, even one for 3-6 months.
If you want a tattoo please log on here or here. (click on each photo for zoom)
obviously both pictures are taken from bmezine.com
unless you’re e chemistry freak, it’s pretty useless to get yourself a tattoo with the Periodic Table of the Elements

I guess that this type of tattoo will get you in prison, sooner or later
I like this one but am not sure on how it’s going to look after 15 years.
Cute!

As she is a legal adult, she IS entitled to do whatever she pleases with her body.

I think the skull tattoo is so funny. Humans have 32 teeth, but that idiot has 36 teeth tattooed on him. If you are going to get something tattooed on your face you better make sure it is correct.

You say ‘she thinks she’s entitled to do whatever she pleases with her body’ as if she doesn’t. She does, and her mother should respect that. We all make dumb decisions when we’re young; and part of growing into adulthood is facing our mistakes and learning from them. This is, of course, assuming that getting a tattoo is a mistake, which I don’t think it is, and to assume that meaningful, responsible decisions can’t be made by eighteen-year-olds is quite gauche in this day and age.

I’m sorry, are 18 year olds NOT allow to do whatever they want with their body?
Last time i checked the whole idea was that at 18 you’re free to do what you want.
There are worse things in the world then tattoos, maybe you should spend a little more time worrying about them and less time telling people what to do with their bodies.

Many kids these days want to do something that puts them outside the norm and has been for a long time. Truth is no matter what her mom or anyone else thinks she is going to do what she wants and as an 18 yr old it is her right to do so…
Some people get stupid tattoos that apply to their lives only at that moment. Encourage her to choose something that will last her lifetime because the tattoo will..
There has also been quite a stretch in the technology for laser removal if she really does change her mind later.
Fact is we were all kids once and we made our own choices – allow your kids to grow up.

I have about 14 tattoos myself. The most important thing I can say to anyone wanting to get one is this: Wait and really think about it. It is alife time thing. I got one done by my best friend when we were about 16 and at 20 finally got it covered up because it was so screwed up.
Also if your gonna get one…make sure it is a good artist. You don’t want to be stuck with some thing dumb.
Now on to these…some are pretty dumb, but all are pretty original and some are funny.
Girls with tats are sexy. Same goes for piercings. Just don’t over do it.
And if your a fat chick, don’t get your navel pierced…or maybe go ahead…they might only charge you half price since people will only be able to see it when you stand up.

I’m all for tattoos, and yes, 18 year olds are legally allowed to get tattoos of whatever stupid thing they come up with when hammered. Also, her mother, as the mother of an 18 year old, is free to kick her out of the house/stop paying her rent/tell her to get a friggin’ job, or whatever it is that parents do for hipster kids these days, for getting a tattoo of whatever stupid thing she came up with when hammered. But if none of those apply, by all means, girl, do whatever the hell you want.

I’m 18, and the day after my 18th birthday I got my first tattoo.
There’s an age limit on tattoos for a reason. When you’re 18, it’s your decision, not your parents. You don’t need their permission to get it, so it actually IS okay for her to do whatever she wants to her body.

I too am slightly offended at your patronizing tone in regards to this young lady. At 18 she has reached what is known as the “age of majority” which allows that she is no longer a minor and may exert control over her own person-including her body. I recieved my first tattoo on my 18th birthday and was in love with it then and continue to be in love with it now. I also came from a family that did not approve of tattoos, however, I showed my parents what I intended to get and even invited them to be present at the appointment. While they still do not like that I have tattoos they conceded that I am an adult and have the right to choose what to do with my body and my money. This young woman is obviously turning to you for help with this situation, and you should concentrate on that instead of ridiculing her desires. I must caution though that before she has anything permanent placed on her body she needs to find a design that she is sure she will always want. While laser removal has greatly improved it is still an expensive procedure that can take multiple appointments to achieve the desired effect. Another important aspect of getting a tattoo is research. This is where you can help her. She needs to find an artist who is liscensed, affable, has a clean shop, and who does excellent work. One of the best recourses is to talk to people who have good looking artwork and inquire where they got it done and by who. She also needs to consider the placement of her tattoo. Even though society is becoming more liberal it is important that she take into cosideration what an employer will think if she chooses to get a design that cannot be covered with clothing. If you open up a serious dialouge with your neighbor’s daughter then you can help to ensure that getting a tattoo is a pleasent experience for her and help her to avoid making a bad decision, as well as keep her from ending up with a tattoo that she is unhappy with or ashamed of.

youre a self absorbed ass. if people want to send a fucking message through their body then fuck off, it’s their business, asshat.

@Johnny: I have to agree with you!

@Marcus: learn how to be polite. Or better, learn how to read between lines.
@FBI : Am a woman! My neighbor is my childhood best friend
@Sarah: why be offended? I guess about every teenager says :”I have the right to do whatever I want with my body”, even I said it when I was 18. The thing is to be careful what you actually do with your body. It’s very important that someone is near you to guide you and temper some “cool attitudes”. I don’t think you would let your daughter be exposed to the “Emo” trend or some other not so healthy lifestyle, would you?
My neighbor decided to let her daughter get a tattoo. Actually, after reading some of the comments my 18 years old neighbor decided she would go for a tattoo that’s going to disappear in 6 months, she’s a bit afraid of permanent tattoos.
Thank you all for your time here

this is nothing. most children are fucking by the age of 12 nowadays.

Wow. You commenters are complete airheads!
I am all for her getting a tattoo. I hope it will be either a very nice one that she will like forever or a really really bad one. Then there will be a point in her getting one. Hope it has a meaning apart from having a tattoo. Probably won’t, but hey…
Having said that, you guys who are upset about the mother’s way of expressing herself can go get an “L”-tattoo on your forehead. Seriously. Do you think the mother shouldn’t care about her daughter? Give it a break. If the daughter wants to get a tattoo, fine. Maybe she is going to get one for the right reason, maybe not. Daughter’s choice. That’s not the point. You turn eighteen and you start learning from your mistakes. That doesn’t mean other people should just stand by and watch when you do something potentially life-altering and not say a single thing!
The tattoo might be a great idea, or it might not. Her mother giving her VIEW of the thing, not being the one that makes the decision, is the way it is and probably always will be. It is the way it should be.
You people are essentially saying “jump jump” and stating that anybody should be allowed to jump into any body of water they want without first asking how deep it is. Sure they should, but do you see the point?
You people are the reason why the world is the way it is. Filled with egocentric j*ck****s who want to do it “their way”, unable to see it from any other perspective than their own.
You can all go jump in a lake.

Inq, that is basic human nature. People want others to live the same way as them and think the same as them, and to an extent assume that they do. This is the basis for Law.
Anyway, a tattoo isn’t really that big a worry for a 18y/o compared with having kids and all the rest of it (i.e. 14hr shifts, manual labour, 7 days a week) young women had to do even just 50 or 60 years ago. I’m 21 and spent most of my childhood and adolescence outdoors – the contrast between me and people who have lived indoors most of their life is unbelievable.
They will worry about inconsequential things even past the age of 18, well into their 20′s, and fail to see the bigger picture. But this is mostly because of the limitations in their lives – silly little things are the most important things in that situation. Forbidding a tattoo makes it as important to her as finding a house is to me, it becomes the number one goal. How do you expect anyone to actually get on in life if they are kept caged with nothing for amusement except working out how to get around the authorities and get a tattoo?

So this 18 year old wants to be a grown up and make grown up decisions? Here’s a plan: BE a grown up – get a job, get your own place and stop asking mama for permission.
But if you’re gonna live at home, and not pay your own way, you need to respect your parent’s rules.

Yep – if people want to permanently make themselves look stupid that’s their business. Personally, I find a tattoo on a girl a big turn off. It reeks of a combination of attention seeking and an absence of imagination.
